Hey Zack! You probably don't know me because you have so many fans. Are you ready for baseball season? I sure am. I have been reading your books, "The Baseball" and "How to Snag Major League Baseballs," over the offseason to get ready for some Yankee games. In fact, I have already got tickets to a Yankee game on April 23. I have seats in probably your favorite section: 104, Row 11, seats 1 and 2. I was wondering if you were going because I really want to meet you at a game. I had a chance once at a Pirates @ Phillies game last year, but I was in a field trip from Connecticut and we had the WORST seats and were confined to our section. Plus, we missed batting practice, came in the 2nd inning, and left before a record save and an interesting ending. Anyway, thanks for reading and I hope to hear that you'll be at the game in April. You probably don't know yet, but if you do, please tell me. I follow you on twitter to stay up to date with your snagging anyway. Hey. I've been watching YouTube videos all night on what you do! And its awesome, I'm from Boston and go to the sox about 15 times a year, my cousins have amazing tickets 7 rows behind the plate and it's incredible. I have got one ball when I sat in right field, but a little girl was trying to get one the whole game so I gave it to her. Anyways, I wanna get some autographs and some baseball! My love for the game is serious, maybe not as strong as yours, but I'm up there. Hey my name is Richard, I'm 15 and a young ball hawk, I just starting this past season. My home stadium is Baltimore. You inspire me to do great things and I watch all you're videos and blogs I've email you before but I just had one question because I'm planning on visiting Yankee stadium next year and I wanted to know about the Yankees Bp tour, does it allow early access in to the stadium and are you allowed to catch balls hit during the your. And do you just stay in there after the Gates open or when the tour ends do you have to go back outside and stand in line? Also congrats on ballhawk of the year.

Hey Zack! You probably don't remember, but I've emailed you a few times and I ordered your book "How to Snag Major League Baseballs". Since I bought it, I've been to four games and snagged 5 balls, my first five ever. I'll also be getting your book "The Baseball" soon. Anyway, I was wondering if you knew something about Wrigley. Do you know how tight security is there? Do I NEED a ticket in the bleachers to get in there for BP? Or can I buy a ticket somewhere else and go in the bleacher section for BP? Thanks.

My name is Zane and I'm writing to you about your baseball collection. I live in Minnesota so I'm a huge twins fan and my family has season tickets a few rows behind the Twins dugout. And we've had tickets ever since target fields been around so 2010. Over the course of 5 years I have around 60 baseball courtesy of toss ups, foul balls, and if I move around during the game home run. Hey Zack! Huge fan! Wanted to show you these cool commemorative baseballs that i saw were used for Randy Johnson's number retirement. I didn't see this ball in your commemorative collection. Did you know they were using these balls? I'm sure you would go to try and snag one if you knew about it. Not my ball and not spam lol... Just thought you would be interested in this ball. 
Also I'm 15 and work for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Brewers AAA affiliate) so if you ever want to go to a game and your in the area you can lmk... It's a great place to snag balls, before i was a bat boy i would go behind the stadium during bp and be the only one out there and get 10-20 balls based on how they were at hitting that day.

I have been following you on Twitter for about 2 months. I ran across one of your videos and started looking you up. It's amazing what you do. I have never caught a game used ball, but I recently caught my first ball from a throw up after a game by Cody Decker. He even signed it before he threw it up. My son & I are big fans of yours. He is 10 and is a fellow ballhawk. He has read your book and uses some of your ideas and has come up with some of his own. We know your pain of being called a ball hog, his record is 22 balls in a single day. People often boo him but we take that with a grain of salt. Hi Zack,

I don't know if you remember but at the Phillies game on September 14 I briefly spoke to you after batting practice near the Nationals dugout. As I said I see you at lots of Yankees games as I'm a die hard Yankees fan and go to about 10 games a season. I started reading your blog about a year ago and that really got me into ball hawking. I now get about 2 or 3 balls at Yankee Stadium a game. Which is really cool. 

Anyway, since the Yankees are on the road I convinced by dad to drive to Philly for a game on Monday and at that stadium your tips really helped. I got 8... Including a game used ball! I just wanted to say thank you for your tips and tricks and I hope to see you at a few more Yankee games this year!

Hi Zack. My name is Andy, and I watch your videos all the time. They are awesome, and it has gotten me into ball hawking. The games I go to are minor league baseball games. It isn't as easy to get balls and memorabilia, but you can usually snag around 2-3 a game. The teams don't use commemorative balls, but that's okay.

My favorite MLB team are the Washington Nationals. I tried going to a game this year and get some 10 year Nats commemorative balls, but it just couldn't happen. Have you been to a Nats game this year? If you have, would you be interested in selling or trading a Nationals 10 year commemorative ball? I really want one, so if you can please let me know.

If you are not available to move them, I totally understand.

It has been a personal goal of mine to snag a game used ball. I have tried many times at MLB games, but have had no luck. However, at a recent Syracuse Chiefs (Triple-A) game, I got tossed one at the end of the 5 inning. I just wanted to thank you for your tips on shagging balls, especially that they can be applied to almost any ballpark. I hope to use your tips for next season!

HI Zack,

My name is Ryan. I am 13 years old. I think you are one of the coolest guys ever. I am about to order your book The Baseball tonight or tomorrow. I am going to use all your ballhawking tips when I go to a Stockton Ports game on August 28. I would use those tips on Tuesday when I may or may not be going to an a's game if the book comes in by then which I doubt it will. I have collected 2 major league balls this season and 2 single A balls this year on May 17 and 18. They are the only pro balls I have gotten in my life. My first major league ball was tossed up by an usher after someone hit a home run between fences down the right field line at the oakland coliseum. Out of my MLB and A balls my favorite was my second A ball where it was after the game I spotted a ball in the camera well no security was in sight so I hopped in and hopped out. It was cool. I read a lot of your blog and I have looked at everything on your website. I think it's cool that you can get all the memorabilia from these games. Good luck on reaching 10,000 balls. Wow!! I can't even dream of getting that many.

Hello Zack

At least a year ago we had a long talk at the Argosy about baseball. I have two of your books and have read them. You did not get enough credit for writing them in the media firestorm.

I have been very much aware of the publicity generated by your catch of the Alex Rodriguez 3000th hit and home run ball, and have delighted in and approved of your actions. I read that shortly thereafter you attended a game with your mother and were meeting and greeting children at the park.

My son Nathan shares your enthusiasm for baseball and has been a Yankee Stadium ticket holder since 1995. He presently has season tickets (limited packages) at Fenway, Washington and the Brooklyn Cyclones. He has been to 48 major league baseball parks in the US. Lacks the new one in Florida and can't match your trips to Tokyo and Australia. He has two little twin girls, now nearly 3 years old. They have been to baseball games at Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, Washington and the Cyclones.

Whenever they go to a Park Nathan and Missy ask them: "what do you want as a souvenir?" They reply: "a ball."

My question to you is: If you are planning to go to the Yankee game on Wednesday, August 26th would it be possible to arrange a meeting with Nathan and the girls? And possibly sign a ball for them?

Ive been to Camden, the trop,fenway and nats park. I recently stumbled along your Twitter and saw some of the hate mail you have received. I am not the biggest baseball fan but am shocked by how many nasty emails you must receive daily and the severity of those emails. Just wanted to let you know you have a new fan! I really don't understand what is such a big deal about you keeping baseballs that you value more than others (a-rods home run ball for example) First of all he is not entitled nor the Yankees to that ball. Yes it would be a kind gesture to give it to them, but nothing states that you are required to. Also I really am impressed by the charity work you have done and continue to do. I don’t even know where to start!

First of all, congratulations on snagging A-rods 3,000th hit! Just for the record, he has been one of my favorite players since he was with the Mariners and I was just a kid, I’m 26 now. I won’t go into detail about a-rod. I know we all have our own opinions on the guy but I will say he’s human, and we all make mistakes. I’m a die-hard Yankees fan and I am from Texas. I go to NY about once a year to see the Yankees play in Yankee Stadium and see them every chance I get when they are in Texas. I’ve been a Yankees fan since I was a kid so you can imagine how lucky I think you are for not only being able to go to a Yankees game whenever you want, but for catching a milestone home-run/hit from one of the Yankee Greats! And receiving everything the Yankees provided for the ball. I hope you appreciate it as much as I would. Thanks for doing the right thing and giving the ball back. He’s a family man and I’m sure his daughters really appreciate that.

To be honest, I didn’t know who you were until you caught the ball. I remember seeing a few of your interviews and thinking, “who the F does this guy think he is!” But as I did more research on who you were and time went on I realized you were a good guy just trying to do the right thing for everyone involved. It was a huge decision to make from multiple angles.

I am a huge baseball fan. I love baseball. I played baseball all my life and was pretty good at it. I made the varsity team my freshman year in H.S. and was the starting 2nd baseman. I am very passionate about the sport.

Someone once told me, it doesn’t matter what you do in life, just try to be the best at whatever it is you do.

Well, I’m an investigator working at a personal injury law firm with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, but I’m not the best at that I do….yet. You my friend, are the best at what you do and you should be proud of that. I’ve been to many baseball games and I know and understand that ball hawking is truly an art. But, it’s not just ball hawking that you do. It’s what you do with your ball hawking skills that is impressive like the money you donate and raise for Pitch In For Baseball. Continue doing what you do! God knew exactly what he was doing when a-rod’s ball came flying in your direction.

Please let me know when you plan on coming to Texas for an Astros or Rangers game. I would like to possibly meet you and talk baseball. I enjoy discussing and talking baseball with individuals that understand and appreciate the sport.

I’ve been to many games and about 6 or 7 World Series games and I have to say that the best baseball game that I have ever attended was last year when Jeter got his final walk off hit at Yankee Stadium. Just thinking about it still gives me chills.

Anyway, I wont take much more of your time. I know you are a busy guy these days. I just wanted to congratulate you and thank you for all you do for the game of baseball and the game I love.

Hey Zack,

First off let me say this, I feel like a "Hample Hipster" in that I had found out about you a little while before this A-rod business has happened and every time I hear or see something about you I think in my head: "psh I knew about him way before you did!" (which isn't very cool of me). I gotta say man, I've been lurking these past few weeks and really going back and forth about the whole ball thing, all the while having no idea what I would do with it. I haven't been going back and forth about you being an ass because I know it's not like that and you're not like that (I'll get to that in a bit) but there were so many arguments both ways that were convincing. In the end I think you got it right. I envy you dude, with all the memorabilia and also that sick donation, it's all awesome. As a Tigers fan I would have given my right arm to receive the things you did.

I love baseball, as a young boy I dreamed of spending my days at the ball park but getting baseballs at a stadium seemed so farfetched, I never thought it was possible... Fast forward 10 or so years and I am now 23 and being bored at my internship I stumbled across your name and all of your accomplishments. I spent hours looking up all your collections, experiences, records, etc. It got to the point where I thought "I need to at least try this for myself, I dont know if I can be as dedicated but lets give it a shot!" So I purchased your book, and boy did it make a world of difference. I now live near Detroit (30 mins compared to 2 hours where I grew up) and I have been to 7 games thus far and I have caught 14 balls. Haven't been to a game without a ball! I gotta hand it to you man, your tips work again and again. My favorite is being first in line and running to the OF sections and finding balls just laying there. I do my best to give balls to kids whenever the opportunity arises. Regardless of what keyboard bullies say, man, you're a role model. Now I'm not saying "ALL BOW DOWN TO HAMPLE" because it's not like that. You're a guy following his passion and continuing his collection, it just so happens that you're the best at what you do. When you're the best, there is always going to be those who can't or will not appreciate the effort. After experiencing a small fraction of the effort of what you do, man, I gotta tell ya, you deserve a ton of credit. I think you're handling this negative feedback correctly. You are proving (in the best and most effective way possible) that you're not a monster. Like I said before I 100% appreciate everything you have done.

I don't expect you to get back to this for a little while especially after following your blog and seeing how swamped you are. Hey Zack, My name is Luke from Winchester, Virginia and I'm 14 years old. I love to snag baseballs and I'm a really big fan of yours. I have been to about 25 games this year. I usually go to the Nationals games. This year I have 70 baseballs and counting. I have been getting baseballs since I was 7 years old and I have about 2,000 baseballs. My best balls I have caught was a game ball (foul ball) by Ryan Zimmerman in the inaugural season of the new nationals stadium. I also congratulate you on catching A-Rods 3,000 career hit. Dear Zack: I saw that you did give A-Rod’s the ball he hit marking number 3000. I was very pleased to watch the press conference. I am sure the Pitch in for Baseball Charity was more than thrilled by the Yankee’s very generous donation of $150,000. A-Rod was very cool the way he handled the question about your initial tweet. He took the focus away from you and put on himself and the less then temperate remarks he has made over the years. I am sure PIFB, is also quite happy that Hal Steinbrenner and the Yankees intend to develop a continuing relationship with their charity.

So, true to my word and following your lead, I made a donation to Pitch in for Baseball today.

I must admit I thought you were being a jerk by not giving up the ball initially but after reading your blog I can see why you played it the way you did, even if you kept the buck fifty yourself who could blame you especially when you've got athletes making ludicrous amounts of money. Even if he bought it himself it would be less than a half week's wages for Arod.

More kids should get to play ball because of your selflessness and in the end that benefits everybody with an interest in the game.

I remember his comment about you not being like the Jeter guy or "where was the Jeter guy when you need him". That just came off as self-entitled to me. I don't know if he seemed genuine in the press conference or not, but that ball is no longer his once he hits it into the stadium. It's also kind of creepy for the Yanks to send some burly ex-cop packing heat after fans with HR balls. I'm a fan of the team and tradition but the organization looks out for its fans about as much as a drug dealer does when a client OD's.

I have been following the story of you catching the ARod ball. In fact, I watched quite a few of your YouTube videos (even as far back as the Rosie O'Donnell show, haha) just to see you in action. I live in SC, so plan to use your tips to attempt to catch at least one next time we go to Turner Field (hopefully to see the Cubs...GO CUBS!!!).

I just want to commend you on how you have handled the situation. Getting money from charity and some special treats from the Yankees definitely shows the two things that you are most passionate about (helping others and baseball). Keep doing your thing and staying true to yourself (glad to see you are not letting the outside 'noise' get to you).

We just read your tweet about the A-Rod ball. We are from Seattle, and so never discuss A-Rod in these parts. But, you made our day donating your $ for the 3K ball to your favorite charity, "Pitch In For Baseball". Now, that's a home run! While we didn't do a matching donation, since we love baseball(we have been to 15 of the MLB parks), and baseball is the quintessential all-American game, and it is the 4th of July…..we just posted $25 to the same organization.

Your website with all the photos is just fabulous, what a zest for life you have; and your MLB blog is full of such detail, like we are all right there in the moment.
Have a beautiful baseball summer…..and may the Mariner's win the World Series, or in our case, just have a winning season. We cannot believe it has been 13 years since the M's have been to the playoffs….ugh!

Two weeks ago, i never heard of Zack Hample, today, thanks to the power of google, i feel i've gotten to know a kindred spirit. If nothing else, it's clear we share a true love, -the greatest game ever invented. From what i've read, even before the A-Rod ball, Zack's been living a life i could only be wildly envious of, from the family book store to Yankee stadium, and all parks in between, not to mention the power one must feel when a ball off the bat of a major-leager smacks the leather, spending hours shagging fly balls anywhere, let alone a major league ball park, is a blissful life i could only dream of!.. Obsession is often looked on in a negative light, but any man who understands passion, also understands some degree of obsession. A conscious man knows how to let amazing things happen through obsession, this is just one more example to add to history. Congratulations Zack!- No one deserved it more than you!..

Secondly, i want to commend you on the way you have carried yourself throughout this ride in the spot light, I've listened to a number of interviews, read much of what has been written, good and bad, as well as much of what you've written, and i'll say that your class and intelligence displayed is only second to your genuine love and enthusiasm for the game. I'm guessing the last week has been as nerve wracking as it has been incredible, and from what i've witnessed, you've handled it all with the same attention and clarity as i'm sure you do when shagging fly balls.

On a personal note, as stated, i love very little as much as i love the game, to me, baseball is life, always has been, since my first memory, my mitt goes everywhere with me, (in the truck), i can talk ball till your ear falls off, and play catch till my arm falls off,. Maybe that's why it saddens me so to see how baseball, like all pro sports, has been, IMO, degenerated. Notwithstanding the "A-Roid", fiasco, i've seen how the integrity and respect for the game has taken a back seat to the commercial side, and in all honesty, the side show, pretence and what seems to be annual controversy irk me so much, that i am only able to stomach games on the radio, in the back ground, or i spend Saturday nights on Youtube, watching clips of Bob Feller, Ted Williams, or Walter Johnson, while flipping to Baseball ref. to learn something new. I'm 10 years older than you Zack, and like you, i've never had a favourite team, preferring to follow individual players and situations, but if pressured i'd say the Reds of the 70's, the big Red Machine, and yes, Pete Rose was my hero, and that's all i'll say about that..:(

So, in conclusion, if you asked me what to do with that ball, i'd suggest this Zack: how about a campaign of donations for your charity, by anyone who wants to see that ball thrown in the hudson!- i'd start that list myself!

I went to MCU Park last week and unfortunately batting practice was rained out but I was able to use the glove trick to get a ball from the bullpen and security didn't say anything. (I know you don't count minor league balls in your collection but I got my first three balls that night. Thanks for the tricks, Zack.)

HOLY SMOKES CONGRATS!

I’ve been a "silent" reader for a long, long time, and just wanted to toss my congrats in on getting the Arod ball. Was watching the game on MLB.TV from Omaha and when i saw you in the mix out in the stands, all I could think of was "yep, obviously". Lol.

Anyway, I know its not your style, but you should seriously think about having the Yankees ask Arod for his best bid for the ball, and then splitting that with pitch in for baseball, and keep the rest yourself. There is nothing wrong with profiting off a multi-millionaire for something they really want, especially one as disgusting as Arod. If you're worried about bad PR, it would die down in a matter of days, and would all be driven by jealousy anyway. 99% of Yankee fans would do the same.

At the end of the day I'm sure you'll do whatever is best, but I'd be lying if I said a little part of me didn't want to see Arod fork over some money for that thing...

Right on, Zack!! I was playing a gig w/ one of my bands and we were about to start when I looked up at the tv and saw your face smiling for the camera. I literally yelled, ‘HEY…I know that guy…that’s Zack!!!’. My wife turned and was able to catch a glimpse and asked, ‘Is that the guy you and Kyle (my son) were going to go watch catch the ball from the helicopter?’ LOL! Then I realized *why* you were on tv and I was so giddy with excitement! Hehe. It’s been awesome watching you make every *correct’ decision, in my opinion, that you’ve made regarding the ball. So many people I know have tried to bash you for keeping the ball and I lay out your reasons to them on why you’re holding onto it and I’m able to change their mind… Excited to see what you decide in the end…even if it’s keeping the ball.

I am very glad that my dad and I got to meet you back in 2013, now I can say that I've met a "celebrity" before. Back then, me and my dad were at a lifetime total of 113 over 6 years, and now in two years, we have doubled it, and at the moment we are at 358 lifetime snags, good enough for 32nd overall on mygameballs. Hi Zack – Congrats! My humble opinion is for you to do exactly what you’re doing: take your time, figure out what’s important to you, find some ideas that would fulfill those things and do them. Maybe it’s simply hanging onto the ball and passing it down to a future son or daughter. Maybe it’s monetizing it in some way to benefit yourself and/or others. Maybe it’s using it to generate publicity for yourself or causes that you feel strongly about.

Whatever you decide, I truly feel that the desires of MLB or the player should NOT be a factor in your decision. As a fan who’s given all kinds of time, energy and money to MLB through the years by simply attending games, buying food, drinks and parking, and also by watching and listening to games on TV and radio, I’ve come to accept the fact that in the eyes of MLB, I am simply a vehicle for generating more and more revenue.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the game of baseball and the MLB product, and will continue to watch and spend money. However, the simple fact that MLB gets what they want from me (my money — often begrudgingly, esp. when buying food or drink at the stadium), gives me enough reason to conclude that we as fans should get what we want from MLB when we are given that opportunity.

And, you, Zack, have been given (maybe I should say ‘earned’ because I know how much you work at it) a fabulous opportunity. So, enjoy it!

I am glad that it went into the stands! I am not one of those blind Yankee fans who feels ARod deserves it. I think you are right that ARod doesn't deserve to have the slate wiped clean just because he's "sorry". Do with it what you will. You've earned that right.

I have a graphic design business, so if you ever need any pro bono design work for Pitch in for Baseball, it would be my pleasure. I think your ability to share your love of the game is fantastic. I know you probably won't get around to seeing this email, but just wanted to give you my thoughts on the whole situation. And of course, this is pretty late but better late than never. Just a sidenote, but I follow you on Twitter and I like how you acknowledge some of the anecdotes of others' stories about your positive influence, but I'd probably prefer if you didn't post a picture of this email if you see it, just for certain reasons haha.

After learning on ESPN that you had snagged A-Rod's ball and had collected 8k + prior balls, I was naturally shocked. And so I looked you up on Twitter and read some of the initial comments people had. I admit, I had formed an opinion of you by just reading the tweets that mentioned your hostility towards other fans...but I knew that it'd be totally unfair to form prejudices of others based on others' comments.

Looking at your Youtube Channel as well as other previous news videos featuring you, I quickly came to the realization that you had been doing this for a ton of years (well, I mean obviously based on your 8k balls but this was a further testament of your dedication to baseball) and this was your passion; I definitely would go to more baseball games if I could, and what you've done has definitely been inspiring. I then looked at some of your videos and saw that instead of wrestling with other kids for balls, you actually gave a significant chunk of your BP balls to other kids. Naturally in the comments, there were swaths of people mentioning all of the negative qualities ascribed to you and how you were being "selfish" or a "jerk", etc. And then...I looked at your charity prize drawing video where you mentioned your charity among many of the other positive, influential things you've provided to society. I was naturally shocked to see only 1 comment and it had nothing to do with the A-Rod ball. This all leads to my point, I guess, that society tends to judge things based on a rumor a few people may have spread. And I think the key issue is jealousy and the fact that others will never be able to live a life as passionate as yours has been. Despite my initial reaction that a fan who "pushed" other children for balls should not deserve the A-Rod ball, I came to realize that you probably were the most fitting person to snag that ball: someone who passionately pursues his own dreams, who helps around his family, and who helps others around.

So keep doing what you do and never stop to change what you're doing based on what haters say. All everyone wants is attention and people are just jealous that you have it right now...but the thing is, the attention is deserved. Your charity and other help towards society has provided many with the opportunity to pursue endeavors they never had the chance to. Do what you feel is best for both A-Rod and yourself with the ball. Who knows? Maybe I'll even meet you at a game sometime; but regardless, you have made another true fan of baseball and LIFE, unlike others who are jealous of your success.

I wanted to purchase one or a few of your books. However, I am not sure which ones to purchase. I wanted to buy the one on how to snag MLB baseballs but saw that it was being sold for a lot of money. So I was wondering if it is worth purchasing or if another one or both of the other books you have written would be better options? If you suggest both which one is better if I am trying to find one like the one on how to snag MLB baseballs and want to learn how to catch MLB baseballs as well as the specifics of it? Hey Zack, I would just like to start of by saying how real you have been. I've been a Yankees fan all of my life since I met Joe Girardi when I was 3 because he grew up in my hometown. I live in Central Illinois and for me attending Yankees is a dream. I've attended 3 in my life but they pinstripes rarely come to Illinois. But once I heard about you catching the ball I thought to myself why is he not giving the ball back?!?! But then I thought what would I do? And then realized you are doing what everyone should. Thinking about it so you make the right decision. And all this hate you are getting is absolutely ridiculous. And you being able to handle that is amazing. I know your life has changed now and you probably get emails like this a lot now. But I want you to know what you've shown me. You have become a role model by catching a ball. And that's kind of crazy but, stay you Zack you're awesome.

P.S.
I've often dreamt of getting an MLB ball but have never been close. I guess I need to read your book, but the local Barnes and Noble doesn't have it. Which is quite upsetting. So if you would be even more awesome as to send me one of your 8,000 balls or a book I'd go wild.

My name is Gavriel I am a huge sports fan. I am an aspiring journalist/sports announcer. I am a 9/10th grader at in Lawrence New York, where I write for the school newspaper. Hey Mr. Hample. I just got your book "How to Snag Major League Baseballs" and I was wondering if you have any advice on the best place to go at Camden Yard during BP to get balls. I know you are super busy and super stressed out so no worries if you can't get back to me soon. I'm going August 18th to a game with The 7 Line Army (have you heard of them?) at Camden Yard and if you could get back to me by then that would be great.

I have recently seen you at multiple Yankees gams this year and last. We have spoken before and I saluted you on Tuesday night while leaving in the ninth inning during the Yankees/Phillies game. It's pretty amazing what you have been able to do with your baseball collection. I have had my fair share of BP and in game baseballs, but only one home run ball. Paul Konerko in the last visiting team home run in the old Yankees stadium. Anyway, I am emailing you to tell you that I really respect and like what you have done with the A-Rod ball. Bringing charity in it has been a great idea and not rushing a decision on it was also very bright. The publicity you've gotten has been great! Anyway, I write for a website called doublegsports.com. I am really trying to break the story when you make the decision on what you're going to do with the ball to maybe get some publicity to my name as a writer. Just wanted to say hi and do what ever u want to do with the AROD ball. Ignore all the haters out there a ton of them wouldn't give the ball back for free or even maybe not give the ball back. IMO, they are just jealous. I'm very jealous but I got to deal with it and I don't care. I love to collect sports memorabilia and that would be the best thing ever to have that ball. If I caught that I would keep it too. I would see what the yankees offered but it would have to be big for me to give the ball back. Plus u collect baseballs not signed bats and stuff. Dear Zack,

First off congrats on getting the ball, that is amazing and i'll be forever jealous of you for that. I'm a yankee fan and i'm a fan of a-rod if i had gotten the ball i would've told the yankees for season ticket in those nice seats by the dugout, meet a-rod, and maybe even the cherry on top would be asking for a jeter game used jeresy (Hey, only gonna go up in value, their's not gonna be anymore lol). I also wanted to thank you because you've inspired to want to go too games to try and get home run balls. I went for the first time in the outfield at the yankees game on sat. (The day after A-rod's 3000th hit) and A-rod and Chris young hit home runs near me. I didn't get either one but it was so much fun being out there and the thrive of the chance to get a home run ball. I finally understood why you loved it so much and it seems i've fallen in love with it and I told my dad every yankee game we go to from now on we should sit in the outfield, so thanks for that and i'll be sure to send you an e-mail when I do get a ball at yankee stadium (Hopefully a home run ball!). I also wanted to ask you some questions if you don't mind, these are things i've just wondered i've known about you long before you caught's a-rod's 3k but i never really thought about coming in contact with you until now.

Hi Zack,

You threw me a ball at the May 8th game at Yankee Stadium (after I called you a ringer ;). Thanks for that & for not giving *3000 to AR.

I have that ball as a special one because you threw it to me & I saw you try to catch a ball dropped from a helicopter. 
I didn't know much about you then & only learned more about you because I found a camera at a game that belonged to a fellow ball hawker & friend of yours named Cristian from upstate NY. He has a blog & I was able to contact him & return the camera. On his blog he wrote about you & it got me interested in how you guys do what you do.

Now I'm the old lady trying to catch BP balls before Yankee games. I bring my mitt whenever I go & get excited whenever a ball comes my way. I have never caught one on the fly. Ichiro threw me one really hard last year on 5/1/14 & laughed like crazy that I was able to catch it (I was on field in the opening between monument park & the bullpens in a roped off area). A friend has season tickets & gets some perks like that.

In closing I just want to say try not to listen to all the negative comments people are hitting you with. I have been setting the record straight about how you give kids (& old ladies ;) balls all the time. Hold out for a big payday, get a lawyer for sure, but definitely do what feels right to you.

Hey Z,

I followed the "action" "live" that night, and knowing where your season ticket is, I was like O Em Jee that ball went right to the spot!!! However, my first thought (since I couldn't spot you on the replay the first time) was that you would have gone over to LF and that you were then pissed that it went to your seat. So I went to your twitter and Oh Em Jesus, silly me, you were where the ball went, and you had it in your hands. Bravo. And I and every other SANE person salute you on what seems like an obvious choice not to give your ball that is rightfully yours and only yours, despite what Ms. Capernicus says, back to the fraud who hit it. But of course once the media gets its collective dick hard about certain ideas, the herd mentality snowballs the fuck out of control and suddenly you, a nice friendly guy who is simply living his life while, bonus, doing a lot for kids that nobody else does, are made out to be some kind of great satan, all for not handing over his own personal possession to the actual satan. (When you're not making a big steamroller out of babies to run over other babies with, which you apparently do at a near-constant rate.) Trying to defend you online is so frustrating for me (and I'm not even you, I'm me, though some people online assume I AM you pretending to be someone else!) so I can't imagine how frustrating it is for you. But I know you know people can be stupid and the stupidest are the loudest. I hung out with some of my family today, the same ones who I'd told all about you the last time I saw them, and today we all talked about this current event which just happens to involve YOU, and just so you know, they all were pissed about all the preposterous made-up shit they've been hearing about someone who they feel is a friend, if only vicariously through me. So, congrats on doing your usual, hope you come up with something cool to do with that ball. Whatever it is, it'll be none of my or anybody else's fucking business.

Not as splashy, obviously, but I also had an adventure at a big-league ballpark this week: a week ago today, I took three old Mets-loving Italian widows from my Brooklyn 'hood--97, 86, and a pup of 75--to CitiField. They got to sit in the dugout pre-game, meet some players (and Wilpon), and get their mugs flashed up on the Jumbotron. A good time had by all. Plus the Mets came from five down and won. The team gave each of 'em an autographed ball, also--Strawberry, Seaver, and Orosco.

Meantime, you don't need me to tell you, but stick to your guns! As I heard you say on TV: if he wants to bid on it, he can.

First off, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sam, I'm a big fan of yours, or just became bigger. You've mastered the art of snagging baseballs, something that EVERY sports fan dreams of catching, but isn't smart enough to figure out odds or where it could be hit to, land, bounce from, hitter tendencies. In my opinion, some team should offer you a contract of being a fielding/position coach.

My first encounter with you was at Shea Stadium. 2006. I was a junior in high school. Cut class to attend opening week. Naturally, it was my first time ever at BP. I went early because the stadium security let everyone in the field level during BP, but of course anyone could stick around there for the game. I couldn't afford anything more than upper $5 seats, but needed to see the game from field.

I'm standing down the left field line next to the triangle grass patch. hoping for a player to notice me, or maybe a bouncer down the line. I saw you whip out your glove trick to retrieve one. I thought it was genius.

You had caught a few more, and actually got a players attention for me to get me a baseball. my first one ever. I thanked you, as what normal person asks for a baseball for someone else. Never. Little did I know you were a collector, yet alone ball-hawk.

I kept seeing you in action at shea, occasionally at Yankee Stadium. Then I'm watching my Yankees in 2008, and saw you back to back nights make those HR catches in the bleachers. I knew right away you had special talents, and really admired you (even thought my days of trying to get baseballs were behind me). I decided to watch some replays and interviews from those, and came across all your youtube videos, interviews on big TV shows, etc.

People hate because they're jealous. I love odds and statistics, and love how you mastered the art of figuring tendencies of hitters vs. Pitchers. MANY MLB managers can't position their players as well as you can yourself based on the matchup.

Around 2009, I lost my love for baseball when the teams opened new stadiums. It was all about money for them. It wasn't as exciting anymore, so I turned to hockey which I'm in love with, and became a ticket broker to join in capitalizing on these new stadiums.

When Jeter hit 3K, I thought that guy was real dumb to give up potentially $50K+ for a "memory to meet derek jeter". It's not like he can afford that, working at a cell phone store. At the time I wished it were you who caught it, and held it ransom. I think everyone secretly wants that, or is jealous it wasn't them.

Then Friday night, my dream came true. You got your hands on history, and my dream of seeing someone hold a ball ransom and unwilling to give it up WAS AMAZING. No one is entitled to anything. I can't wait to read your full story of this.

People say you're a pusher, or whatever in the stands. EVERYONE pushes for a baseball. There's no violence, it's fair game, and you're a pro. And I've also seen you give away more balls than anyone, including many greedy players.

Keep doing what you're doing. Enjoy it. After a few years, you'll be too old to chase these balls, so don't regret anything later. It's a hobby, passion, and bottom line amazing. AND YOUR CHARITY IS PHENOMENAL, KEEP IT UP!!

I don't go to Yankee Stadium often anymore (only Rangers at MSG) (maybe once a year these days to Yankees), but next time I come out, I'll try to find you in the outfield and say hi.

As a Detroit Tiger fan watching the game last night I couldnt believe you wound up with the ball as you still see people scrabbling around looking for it as your hands were up in the air. I'm also glad to see you didn't let Yankee authorities bully you around. In 2005 in Detroit at the All Star Game I caught Mark Teixeria home run ball as it was his 1st HR in a ASG as he was with the Texas Rangers. I was just reading the NY Times and learned that it was you who caught the A-Rod 3,000 hit HR ball, and then refused to give it back to him !!!!

Good for you! I laughed when I read about your involvement. You truly are the King of baseball retrieval.

I despise everything about A-Rod, and was miffed that he joined Jeter and Boggs by having hit a HR for his 3,000th hit. I will not truly be a Yankees fan again until A-Rod leaves, and frankly I am counting the days. After 50+ years of rooting for the Yankees, it is intolerable to me that A-Rod wears the pinstripes.

In any event, I hope that you either donate the ball to the HOF, or simply keep it in your collection. I still have the baseball displayed that you caught & then gave me during the 2011 NLDS playoffs at Citizens Bank Park. I think of you fondly whenever I see it.

BTW, about a year ago I left Philadelphia and am now living in Portland, Oregon. If you are ever out this way, please look me up.

First, fantastic news on getting A-Rod's 3000th. Before I learned it was you, I had wondered if you were the one. How did you manage to snag the homer with all the people around you? Was it a nice jump at the right moment?

I have a partial season ticket plan at CBP. Two seats, first row in left center. My upcoming games are Fri July 17 vs Marlins, and Wed July 22 vs Rays. Should be two very good ball hunting nights, with these opponents and the awful state of the Phils. Would you like to meet me there for one or both games, free ticket? I am a big baseball fan and just heard your interview on ESPN 98.7 Radio here in NY. It must be a great feeling to catch/obtain a HR baseball hit by a player in general but last night getting Arods 3,000th hit a HR must be amazing. I have never been fortunate in games I have attended in my life to catch a HR ball/foul ball besides Tony Clark tossing up a ball to me near 1st base at a game once while he was on the Mets. I like the idea of possibly playing catch in Central Park with Arod for starters.

Congrats dude! In all seriousness, add to your will that that baseball will stay within your family (or trusted family friend) until the end of time and will never be sold. You’ve never gotten to play in the Bigs but you made a sport/competition out of capturing baseballs during live games (and pre- and post-). In essence, THIS is your World Series MVP Trophy. As far as I’m concerned, this is worth way more to you than it is to MLB or A-Rod. You’ve paid your fair share of $$ to attend the plethora of MLB games over the span of your lifetime. You don’t owe anyone anything. Seriously though, put that ball in a safe (with the will) and utilize this opportunity to spread awareness about your books/blogs and charities. Screw anyone that scolds you for milking this opportunity but at the end of the day, you gotta look out for yourself. I’m 21 now and after reading/hearing about you getting screwed at Yankee Stadium since I was 14, it’s poetic justice that now YOU have something that THEY want. I would be a smartass to the Yanks and ask: If his milestones aren’t “marketable” then why do you care so much? And if it’s only A-Rod that wants it, then he would be going above and beyond with his offer. Also think about that time of when you nearly missed Griffey’s 600th Home Run. You were 5 feet away…Let that sink in. I would easily return Griffey’s ball, but this isn’t Griffey we’re talking about here. 7 years later and you’ve finally been able to acquire something close to that. I just got home and I was checking my Facebook feed. I see an article by ESPN titled "New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez notched his 3,000th career hit on Friday night – Derek Jeter-style." I realize, "Hey, that means he hit a home run." My next thought was, "What are the odds that he hit it opposite field, and what are the odds that Zack is there tonight?" I figured it would be "low and high", respectively. I click the video and I literally gasped when the ball was hit straight towards your staircase. Hey Zack, I am arguably a ballhawk who is only fourteen years old. I live in Dallas Texas and love going to rangers games and I've probably been to about fifty. I am going to one this weekend against the Red Sox (My favorite team) and then another one a couple days later against the White Sox. I have been non stop reading your blog and it's very interesting. I have read each blog about the rangers ballpark multiple times, and sadly I will admit that i do read your blog during class. I have been to Minute Maid park, Safeco, Wrigley, Fenway, Comerica and of course Globe Life Park. I have a total of 38 balls in my collection and i have lost over 10 at the games and given away over 15. I have my own ball snagging device which is a can but is flimsy and does't work but only half the time. I have moved on from my device and gone to your marvelous glove trick. It works like a charm (as you know) and I can't wait to put it into action this weekend in between the gap at Globe Life Park. And next time you plan on coming to Arlington, I would love to know.

I would love to meet you and see your collection some day. I'd also like my whole family and friends to go to a game with you some day - or even on a non-game day. 

I am 11 and I am also a big fan of baseball. I have a big baseball card collection but not many baseballs yet. Like you, I don't have a favorite team. My favorite players are Clemente, Robinson and Babe Ruth.

I've been going to ballgames in Milwaukee since 1974 and never got a foul ball there…until April 23rd!! I was on the 2nd deck, section 220, working that beautifully wide walkway. You know the spot. Although I've gotten 3 foul balls in the past I'd never gotten one in my adopted baseball home (I grew up in Queens, 4 miles from Shea). You get my thanks for emphasizing the 2nd deck at Miller Park, and also for other ideas over the years….Easter eggs, toss ups, the glove trick…all of it. I miss your blog entries, but I also realize it must involve lots of time and effort. Keep 'em coming as often as your spirit allows. Finally…Re: "the stadiums in NY suck so much" I can’t get there so your blogs are my conduit. I know you didn’t sign up for that, but there it is. Take it easy, and thanks again.

I even replicated your glove trick, and it actually worked! Dear Zack:

I hope you don't mind that you give off the impression of having a rather full and happy life. Not all of us have been so lucky (I'm working on it).

Baseball has become something that helps a little bit. Your book was very helpful, and so I'm a fan. I didn't grow up watching it; I was in CO before they had a team and not many people were excited about it.

I'm becoming better off. I had a crappy childhood that morphed into some mental troubles. Finally I'm most of the way through a bachelor's degree. I actually took a class called "Baseball in American Culture". Our teacher had digested all of Ken Burns and was regurgitating some of it but that was okay. Our class could have been called, 'Baseball is special and let me tell you why.'

I think sometimes even after you're properly medicated and maybe outside of a REAL depression, I think maybe your brain can stay HABITUALLY in the wrong GROOVE. Then you have to pop out of it.

You seem like a friend sometimes. Your blogs are almost always fun (I don’t read them constantly), your books are good ones, even when they can be on strange subjects. I'm trying to be some sort of a writer too. I might go to Queens College to become a librarian but I’m not 100%.

I don’t have any interest in snagging baseballs. I might be one of those who wants attend with you for your expertise on the subject.

It's all good though. I think in the end things work out if you let them. But baseball is one of those tonics that's readily available.

I just like your work. You seem like a positive guy.

Dear Zack,

I have read nearly all of your blog entries and watched all of your YouTube videos in preparation to try and get a ball at the Mets vs. Nationals game at Citi Field 8/13/14. I saw you at the game during bp and in the bottom of the ninth over by the third base dugout, you looked so into it I figured I wouldn't bother you.

So I took your advice and wore the Nationals t-shirt during bp even though I am a die heart Mets fan. Eventually I ended up staying towards the batters-eye in left field waiting for a toss up or home run. Eventually, in the last batter of bp I was able to get Gio Gonzalez's attention and got a ball. I would just like to give you a HUGE thank you because if it wasn't for you and your tips I wouldn't have been able to et that ball.

Now for my question, I am going to Nationals Park on Sunday 8/17/14. Do you have any tips? I have rosters printed, nationals shirt and a pirates shirt and hat. Anything else I should be ready for or expect at Nationals Park?

Hello Zack,
My son has been using your technique to collect balls all season. He started collecting NCAA balls while the University of Utah baseball season was in session. He then applied his skills at our Pacific Coast League Triple-A Angels affiliate games, the Salt Lake Bees. We are going to Denver's Coors Field on August 7th. This will be his first Major League game. He is hoping that you might be there too. Unfortunately, we are not able to pay your attendance fee at this time.

Here are his current 2014 stats:
NCAA pac12 balls = 24
Pacific Coast League = 101
Major League = 3 (acquired from our Triple-A field)

Just wanted to say "Thank You" for signing my 11 year old son Anthony's ball at the Met game on July 11th. You also took the time to chat with him for a few minutes. He was thrilled!!!! We just went out yesterday and bought your books, "The Baseball" and "Watching Baseball Smarter." Anthony is obsessed with baseball and we live at the Syracuse Chiefs ball park since we only live about 15 minutes from there. Usually every game he ends up bruised, cut and/or bleeding trying to get balls. He has over a 100 from there and counting.

You are my inspiration I have collected 75 baseballs in 15 total games 69 from Bp and I worry more about autographs. Thanks for the reply. It honestly made my day. I think there needs to be more ball hawk videos on youtube. When I watch your videos I feel like im actually there with you. My only problem is being nervous or shy around the players. The only thing cool I ever got was a Diamondbacks hat autographed by 3 players and a broadcaster.

Hey Zack. There's something I've been meaning to tell you for a while, it may seem weird but your appearance on the Tonight Show with Conan really made Conan look like a dick, and for some reason I still remember it to this day. And I'm finally trying to get closure on it by sending you a message directly :P

I'm from Europe so I don't watch baseball or know anything about it, but I watched that episode of the show and thought your story was pretty intriguing. I mean, I don't know how hard it is to catch baseballs (I imagine it isn't easy), but still, I know something about passion and could recognize it in you, even if my passion is with music and not sports. So just hearing about what you do made me really curious to hear your story, but all I saw was Conan and that fat guy from Curb being dicks.

I thought the interview went fine until Jeff Garlin started messing with you. And then Conan just seemed like he wanted to do his best Letterman impression by just being mean to his guest. I've never seen him like that. Granted I don't watch Conan religiously, but he always struck me as a nice guy.

I imagine you must have felt like shit being ganged up on by two comedians on [almost] live TV. I mean it has to be nerve wracking enough being on such a show, having the host and his guest team up against you, that's just stupid. And for no reason either.

I'm sure you have forgotten about it by now but I haven't, and just wanted to let you know that Conan looked like a right prick that night. I hope everyone else saw what I saw and didn't just side with Conan for the sake of it. And I don't believe in karma or anything but I'm sure you had a smile when you heard Conan was being fired from the Tonight Show. Jay gets a lot of shit but something tells me he wouldn't have done that to you.

Anyway, yeah, that's what I wanted to say. Your ball is also pretty amazing, that's how I found you in here. See ya.

This is a somewhat bizarre request. I've followed your blog & have always been fascinated by what you do.
I live in Virginia and while I was growing up, my father and I would try to make the 5-6 hour drive to either Atlanta or Baltimore for at least one series a year. We were (and still are) huge fans of the game.
We always showed up early to games for B.P. and had horrendous luck snagging a ball. The moment frozen in time, though, was when I was about 7 years old (some 18 years ago), on the right field wall at Camden.
My pops caught a BP HR ball in his glove, but he let the force from the liner vault his glove back against the railing which proceeded to send the ball right back onto the field.
It was the closest we came to getting one together and the moment has been a running joke in our family for almost 2 decades.
I don't know if you could make anything happen, but I would absolutely love to get him a BP ball from Camden (and to share your story with him).
If you're ever in Richmond, VA.... My fiancee and I have 4 season tickets on the home dugout for the Flying Squirrels. We'd love to host you & hear some of your stories in person.

Hi Zack, my name is Stephanie Reed. My fiancé is a HUGE Red Sox fan. His 30th birthday is coming up, and I want to do something special for him. We recently moved from Indianapolis to St Louis for my work. In order to do so, he had to quit his job, which he LOVED and also managed. He is now a stay at home father to our 2 year old son, Mason. My fiancé wasn't happy about being a "stay at home father" and his pride took a hit more than anything I think. He is an absolutely amazing father, and he never once has complained about his new role, although I'm sure he would be happier working, the typical "Husbands" role. But along the way, my son and him have become best friends. It's truly special to watch, and inspires me to work harder so this ride never ends. But my question is this: is there any way you would be willing to send him a baseball FROM Fenway? I would be willing to pay for whatever charges it would take to mail the ball to my home, and even pay you for the ball if you would like. It doesn't have to be a special ball, or anything unusual. A typical, everyday batting practice ball would be just fine, as long as it's actually from Fenway. Like I said, my fiancé is a HUGE Red Sox fan (courtesy of his late Grandfather. They would watch games every day when my fiancé was a kid as a way to keep him off the streets etc. his dad worked nonstop, and his mother was never around and eventually left for good when my fiancé was 11. So baseball, Fenway, and his grandpa are literally the only positive things he recalls from his childhood). Now that he is a father himself, my husband is determined to spend every free second he has with our son, doing what else? Watching Red Sox games.  I would forever be grateful if you could provide any assistance whatsoever. I just want to show him how much he means to me, and how much I appreciate all the sacrifices he has made for me, and our son. If you can't help, I understand and I'll figure out a plan B. Hi Zack,

I recently read Watching Baseball Smarter and The Baseball and they're both great, well done! I liked Watching Baseball Smarter specially because there are certain things that because I never played little league or any organized baseball, I didn't understand why they were done, like the Hit and Run which I knew how it was executed, but didn't know what was the advantage or how pitching from the stretch gave pitchers advantage with runners on base. The Baseball was also great specially the part of the timeline of the ball and understanding how the liveliness of the ball affected the entire game.

The how-to guide for snagging balls was of course fantastic, I'm looking forward to next year to try and snag a couple of balls. I do have an suggestion that I would like to make. The suggestion of wearing a hat or something of the visiting team during BP or long-tossing to stand out is great. Another thing you can do, specially for people who cringe at the thought of wearing something other than their team's hats, is to research (always important, maybe add it as a column to the roster that you suggest people take to the games) some players' alma mater and wear that. Or maybe not even wear it, but just try to match the colors and say: "One ball for a fellow Longhorn here Mr. (Drew) Stubbs?" when the Indians visit the Yankees, for example. Maybe even learn learn the school's hand signal or something like that. Of course the drawback is that you can only choose one college, but that might stand out a lot more than a team cap that they see more often and because often, they spent more time with the school than with the team they currently play for. Maybe you can "choose" different colleges when trying to get balls from one team or the other; people around you might notice it, but what are they going to do, put you in baseball jail? :).

Anyway, I hope that's useful for you and maybe suggest it to clients you go to ballparks with if you think it's a good idea. I would love to be able to go to a game with you at some point but my budget doesn't allow it at the moment (on top of the issue that, you know, there's no baseball in NY right now). Maybe during the off season you can offer a different experience like just talking about baseball over coffee or beer?

Anyway, keep up the good work and congratulations on your charity work.
